Definition: A numerical summary of data is said to be resistant if extreme values (very large or very small) relative to the data do not affect its value substantially.
Example: Median is a good example of a resistant statistic. It "resists" the pull of outliers. The mean, on the other hand, can change drastically in the presence of an outlier. The interquartile range is a resistant measure of spread.

Definition: Results from using a sample to estimate information about a population. This type of error occurs because a sample gives incomplete information about a population.
Example: If one measures the height of a thousand individuals from a country of one million, the average height of the thousand is typically not the same as the average height of all one million people in the country.
